The old five-point scale has been retired in favor of just rating stuff 1-10, which allows me a much more nuanced final rating. Still don't take it that seriously. Most of these come from my own collection, so the grades skew rather high. Your results may vary if you send me stuff to review.

Each album is given three Essential tracks, my personal favorites, regardless of how weird and inconsequential they are. The Quintessential pick is the one I think best represents the album as a whole, so you can try one song instead of a whole album of songs. Non-Essential picks range from merely disappointing to outright unlistenable.

The Folk Implosion

Long-haired freaky people need only apply.

Actually a combination of two releases, The Folk Implosion finds Lou and John in a flightier mood than they were on the already freewheeling ...Take a Look Inside. Putting them together makes sense, as they were recorded in the same sessions, share the same grubby sonics bathed in cassette warble and thumpy drum tones, and match each other in spirit, but the way they're sequenced makes the EP distinctly unbalanced towards the unhinged. While the two songs from the Palm of My Hand 45 start things off friendly enough, in typical freaky Folk Implosion form, the latter songs of the Electric Idiot EP are light on songcraft and quite heavy on screamy trumpet freakouts.

Even before it gets to that point, though, The Folk Implosion is oddball. Gloomy as "Mood Swing" can be, turns out taking it out on innocent people is actually quite catchy. "Lo-Fi Suicide" has a certain blacklight-coated groove to it, all chemical rites of passage that sprawl into the horizon. "Electric Idiot" is shrill, dissonant, and droning, as much a Folk Implosion mission statement as "Natural One" ever was. The descent into madness really begins with "I Reserve the Right to Rock", stuffed with little subwoofer buzzes, orchestral vignettes, and defiant chanting, and only devolves from there. Hardly essential, but a 17-minute portrait of Folk Implosion's impish spirit like little else in their catalog.

Essential: Quintessential: Non-Essential: Rating:
"Palm of My Hand", "Mood Swing", "Lo-Fi Suicide" "Electric Idiot" "Final Score" Unrated
