MUSIC | mariteaux

I've been playing with GarageBand ever since I got my first Mac, but in late 2015, I gained the nerve to put my own songs together. I've gotten a lot better in the past ten years, as you can probably imagine, but I've still got the warm fuzzies for what I used to get up to. I eventually want to learn guitar and bass and maybe have a place to set up a full drumkit (I can play drums, honest), but for now, it's all computer music. I've made it work for me.

Here's a list of my work in chronological order. aphrodisiac is my normal project; it's all about bizarre samples, heavy percussion, and grindy synths, with some light melodic and ambient stuff in between to cool your ears. I've also done music as mtlx (for a defictionalized EP of Y2K trip-hop stuff) and Toxic Doom (for exploring the kinds of music you can make in games, creativity toys, and sequencers for game consoles).

Unreleased songs

You like unreleased material? I do too. I got some stuff that's either waiting to be redone for an album or was on one I decided not to put out here. All downloads are 64kbps MP3; if you want higher quality versions, check my other site!

"They Could Be Fascist-Anarchists..." (unmixed, 2019)
A Break in the Pattern (unmixed, 2019)
Abduction (unmixed, 2019)
The Ghostgrove Reprise (unmixed, 2019)
These ones used to sting really badly. I was on such a musical streak in late 2018 into 2019, working on what was to be Isolated Together, aphrodisiac album #2, and I wasn't keeping very good backups, causing me to lose the projects and lossless renders for these in a freak hard drive accident. Lossy renders still survive, and these are what you have in front of you. Needless to say, not having usable versions of what I thought were my best tracks to date ruined my momentum and put me off working on more music for a couple years.
Still, time and making better songs for the Last Summer EP helped to heal things some. These aren't so complex that I couldn't recreate the project files nearly exactly, least for most of them. I do intend to do that at some point, release those as a standalone EP, and then pursue Isolated Together as a new work with perhaps some of the original tracklist brought forth and reworked further. Would be a lovely way to put the saga behind me.
TAVERN WENCH (hit single, 2016)
Tavern Wench's hit single, the summer anthem of 2016, Tavern Wench. So spicy hot, it causes wildfires in Canada.
Gawain (demo, 2016)
A rarity in that this is the only demo I have in my possession I didn't make with GarageBand! I was testing out an online tracker called SoundBox, and it led to a very bleepy-bloopy sorta sound for this one. I like the melody. This is actually glued together from two SoundBox projects running at different tempos, as the actual program doesn't let you shift tempos dynamically. I think I had aspirations of using this tracker to produce some low-bit stuff that'd maybe get released on 20kbps; never say never, I suppose?
Chimerical (Here Come Monsters, 2015)
This is the original version of "Chimerical" from my first (unreleased) EP, Here Come Monsters. I made that over the fall of 2015 and then decided not to release it because it wasn't very good. I brought back "Chimerical" for In Free Fall because I thought it was pretty catchy, but there's something to be said about how much less overwrought the original arrangement was. I used to feel like this one was a bit better, honestly. What do you think?
As Long As It's Not Me (Here Come Monsters, 2015)
And another of my favorites from that EP. You can hear how basic the sounds I was working with were--I hadn't yet discovered the true extent of destroying sounds with softamps and MP3 compression like I would on later aphrodisiac efforts. This is also mostly the same loop for two and a half minutes, but it's a damn catchy loop. Perhaps one to build on for a future album. For now, enjoy how I got started.

Remasters and other people's music

And, in case you're not interested in my music, I've taken a shot at remastering, restoring, assembling and otherwise playing with other people's music as well. Most of these were done specifically to improve loud, compressed mixes or ease tape hiss. You can find lossless downloads and VBR MP3 streams on the Internet Archive for these; just click on the album art below to be taken to it.
