From the "completely unlikely to be as good as it is" collection, Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak is a cutesy, breezy adventure game that not only captures the flavor of the anime, but works even if you have zero knowledge of the hamsters. In a tiny little world where pet hamsters have disproportionately-sized adventures, a devil hamster named Spat is dead set on ruining all romance in the world, and a fruitcake angel hamster named Harmony enlists the help of Hamtaro and his lover Bijou to stop him and restore peace and love to the world.
Veterans to these portable Hamtaro games will find Ham-Ham Heartbreak very similar to Ham-Hams Unite! on the Game Boy Color, right down to the ham-chat element that wrinkles up what's otherwise mostly running through amusement parks, haunted houses, and beaches to talk to and bring stuff to various hamsters. Ham-chats are various cutesy and amusing made-up phrases that help you interact with NPCs and the world for everything from gossiping to climbing to, uh, pissing. (Hamsters are stinky.)
It's unfortunate how obscure finding some of these ham-chats can be or learning which NPC you have to chat with next, because the rest of it is top-shelf. You meet a ton of kooky, cutesy, melodramatic hamsters on your journey, the graphics are great, the pacing is brisk, plenty of amusing secrets and animations make it feel like an episode of the show, and there's even a few tricky little minigames and plenty of clothes and items to collect around. If this sounds at all like your thing, keep a guide handy, but enjoy the nibble.
